Building Your Mascot
Producing a mascot costume presents many challenges to its creator. Each project presents something new and therefore deserves and requires personal attention.
While the majority of mascot costumes are constructed with basic components such as a head, body, feet and hands, many are not.
Often mascots are objects, such as a brick, an egg, cereal or even bubble gum, and need to be approached in a completely different manner.
Regardless of the design, each mascot costume is unique. At Sugar's Mascot Costumes we always consider: design, durability, comfort, safety and manageability from concept right through to creation.
Getting Started; Concept Design
In order to assist the client in the development of a mascot costume we offer an artwork service.
Often this is to translate a character that is already in some other form, such as a stuffed toy, logo, T-shirt or another advertising medium.
Sometimes the client is uncertain what they are looking for and we will work with them on a concept. A complimentary sketch is provided; however, a nominal fee may or may not apply for more extensive requirements.
Because mascots do not speak, their personalities must shine through in their gestures, and the attention to detail in creation. At Sugar's Mascot Costumes, we work with you to find your mascot's personality right from the concept stage.
Next; Creating Your Mascot Costume;
During the creation process, you'll appreciate the world class quality we offer. Because mascots (especially sports mascots) are always on the go, we take exceptional care to ensure the comfort and safety of the actor or actress inside the mascot costume.
Head: The head is generally carved from a lightweight durable foam. An adjustable helmet is installed for balance and stability. A small battery operated fan circulates 35 cubic feet of air per minute. The eyes and mouth of the mascot are made of porous foam and screening to allow vision and air flow.
The Sony cows, for example, were part of a subway blitz and had to deal with rush hour traffic without a chaperone. We screened the entire muzzle for maximum vision to keep the people inside the mascot costume safe.
Hands: The mascot hands are padded to conceal the hands of the wearer. Dexterity can be increased depending on the needs of the client. Hands are made to suit the mascot costume, anything from paws to cartoon gloves!
Feet: Our feet begin with a thick rubber sole. We can make any kind of feet for your mascot costume - paws, shoes, boots, running shoes, skate covers or even chicken feet!
Mascot Costume Duplication
Many of our clients are realizing the value of having additional mascot costumes.
Duplicate mascot costumes ensure that when multiple events are scheduled at the same time, your "mascot" can be at all of them to represent your organization.
Duplicate mascot costumes are great for franchises, large events, theme parks and companies requiring multiple costumes for a variety of geographical locations.
At Sugar's, we ensure a consistent look to duplicate costumes, or intentional differences (such as height) if that's your preference.
We can duplicate any existing mascot costumes, even if we didn’t make the original. Please note that duplicate mascot costumes are only available to the organization that holds the copyright for the mascot character to be duplicated.
